Introduction to mountaineering courses

Summer Winter
Summer in the Mountains (SIM)
Summer in the Mountains is an introductory course put on by members for the Edmonton Section of the Alpine Club. There will be five classroom sessions and two skills weekends. Classroom sessions cover temperature regulation in the backcountry, clothing systems, gear (stoves, tents, sleeping bags as well as technical climbing gear), travel on snow, crevasse rescue, and rock climbing.

Classrooms:

  • April 8, 15, 22, 29, and May 6
Classroom locations: University of Alberta (room# TBA)

Skills-training weekends:
  • Weekend #1: May 1-2, 2010 (see Crevasse Rescue/Luau weekend)
  • Weekend #2: May 8 (and possibly May 15, if too many students for May 8 weekend)


Costs:
  • $60.00 for the course
  • Accomodations:
  • You provide your own meals and transportation (carpooling) to mountains.
Gear required:
  • Weekend #1:
    • Boots, ice-axe (for glacier travel), helmet
      (available for rent at MEC, early reservations are recommended)
    • Harness, belay device (ATC), locking carabiner.
      (these items are not available for rent)
  • Weekend #2:
    • Helmet
      (available for rent at MEC, early reservations are recommended)
    • Harness, belay device (ATC), minimum 2 locking carabiners, rock climbing shoes (helpful, but not necessary).

Winter in the Mountains (WIM)

Winter in the Mountains is an introductory course put on by members for the Edmonton Section of the Alpine Club. This course is designed to introduce people to the skills they will require for traveling in the mountains in the winter on skis. There will be 4 classroom sessions and 2 skills weekend that cover hypothermia, clothing, gear, shelter, and avalanche assessment.

  • January 14, 2010
  • January 21, 2010
  • January 28, 2010
  • February 4, 2010
Classroom locations: University of Alberta (room# TBA)

Skills-training weekends:
  • February 5-6, 2010
    (also Feb. 12-13 if required, to accomodate extra students)
    Staying at hostel for Friday and Saturday night.
  • February 19-20, 2010
    (also Feb. 26-27 if required, to accomodate extra students)
    Overnight camping, or staying at a hut (depending upon interest).
Costs:
  • $60.00 for the course
  • Accomodations: approx $25.00 per night, for hostel, on skills weekends.
  • You provide your own meals and transportation (carpooling) to mountains.
Gear required:
  • Apline-Touring (A/T) or Telemark skis, with climbing skins
  • Avalanche beacon, probe and shovel

Class room space is unlimited.
Weekend spots are limited due to hostel and backcountry restrictions and will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis: registration for the course by email which is confirmed by fee payment.

Winter on Ice (WOI)

Goals
Winter on Ice is an introductory course put on by members for the Edmonton Section of the Alpine Club. This course is designed to introduce people to the skills they will require for introductory level ice-climbing. There will be 2 classroom sessions and 1 skills weekend that cover walking with crampons, ice climbing technique and gear.

Crevasse Rescue and Luau Weekend

Goals
An opportunity to spend a weekend in the mountains learning and practicing your crevasse-rescue skills during the day, then enjoy a Luau celebration at night.
Prizes awarded for best ladies' and men's costumes on Saturday night!
Dates
  • May 1-2, 2010
Instruction:
  • Beginner glacier travel: (SIM students) 3-person rope travel, ice-axe arrest.
  • Advanced glacier travel: advanced systems for crevasse rescue, 2 person rope travel, rescue of an unconscious climber from a crevasse.
Costs:
  • $80.00 - includes 2 days instruction, 2 nights camping, and dinner Saturday night.
  • FREE - for leaders that have assisted on our courses.
